130 Pedestrian Accidents So Far This Year
Most school children learn to look both ways before crossing the street to help them avoid collisions with cars, but it’s not pedestrians that are the problem. The “car culture” in Houston has created a deadly environment for pedestrians with an astonishing number of auto pedestrian accidents. So far this year, the city has already seen 130 pedestrian accidents, 11 of which were fatal.
There are about 200,000 intersections in Houston, so there is a lot of interaction between pedestrians and cars, but that doesn’t have to mean accidents. The Federal Highway Administration is in the midst of reviewing 12 of Houston’s most problematic intersections; and, while the review isn’t complete, a preliminary report paints a frightening picture.
The report states, “Drivers were observed turning right at the intersections between groups of people walking, failing to look right before turning right on red, and proceeding into the intersection when the turn was blocked by pedestrians.” The report goes on to say officials observed “drivers honked their horns or made rude gestures at pedestrians and bicyclists who had the legal right of way in front of the driver.”
Houston, We Have A Problem
Exactly where Houston’s drivers obtained their aggressive attitude toward pedestrians is unclear; however, it’s causing serious problems. It’s not just large intersections that are dangerous, but every intersection and crosswalk across the city – even small streets can pose a danger to pedestrians. And, because pedestrians do not have any physical protection in the event of a collision, it is extremely important for auto pedestrian accidents to be avoided. Pedestrian injuries are often very severe and can include permanent injuries that prevents the victim from returning to work or living a normal life. In other instances, auto pedestrian accidents can prove to be fatal.
