A young Houston mother picked up her two sons, aged eight and three, from their father’s house earlier this month. At around 5:45 a.m., the family got into a car crash while driving the wrong way. Police said the mother, who was driving under the influence of alcohol, crashed her car into a barrier while speeding. Her eight-year-old son suffered a broken leg, internal injuries, and a shattered shoulder and wrist, while her three-year-old son died from injuries sustained during the crash.

Drunk Driving in a Car Accident

While drinking and driving is illegal in Texas, the possibility of being charged with a crime simply doesn’t deter everyone from doing it. Drunk driving accident statistics prove this true, as Texas has unfortunately held the top spot for the number of alcohol-impaired driving fatalities in the United States for multiple years. In this case, the mother’s blood alcohol level was over three times the legal limit; and, responding officers noted a strong smell of alcohol when they arrived at the accident scene.

The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety conducts a Traffic Safety Culture Index each year. The 2018 Index found 11 percent of drivers admitted to driving after consuming alcohol within the past 30 days.

A “wrong way accident” refers to collisions occurring when a car is driving the wrong way on a one-way road. These scenarios generally result in head on collisions causing some of the most severe injuries of any type of auto collision. When a driver is under the influence of drugs or alcohol, their judgment, reaction time, and vision are impaired. They may not realize they’re traveling the wrong way until it’s too late. Driving under the influence significantly impairs a driver’s ability to both see and comprehend roadway signs.
