Texas Aims To Eliminate Roadway Deaths By 2050
After it was recently revealed Texas leads the nation in roadway deaths, the Texas Transportation Commission voted to formally adopt the goal of reducing traffic fatalities on the state’s roadways by half by the year 2035 — and reducing them to zero by the year 2050. This will not be an easy task considering nearly 3,600 people died on Texas roads in 2018 and at least one person has been killed in a fatal car accident in Texas every day since November 7, 2000.
A fatal car accident can occur anywhere in Texas, but densely populated urban areas like Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio have the most fatal crashes. That being said, more than half of Texas’ fatal traffic accidents occur in rural areas of the state. In addition, Texas has the highest number of fatal accidents involving 18-wheelers in the U.S. More than 13 percent of fatal large truck crashes occur in the Lone Star State.
Most Traffic Deaths are Preventable
Motor vehicle crashes are one of the leading causes of injury-related deaths in the United States. These crashes are typically unintentional and the result of human error. Officials have said most traffic fatalities are preventable, identifying vehicle, road, and human factors as the most common elements contributing to collisions. Some of the leading causes of roadway accidents and resulting deaths include:
- Driving under the influence
- Distracted driving
- Reckless driving
- Failure to yield
- Following too closely
- Cell phone use
- Defective automobile component parts
- Driver fatigue
- Vehicle fire
